A Classic Tequila Mojito

The mojito’s origins can be traced back to the Caribbean island of Cuba, which is believed to have originated in the late 16th century. The name “mojito” comes from the word “mojo,” a term used in Cuban cuisine to describe a sauce made with lime and other ingredients.

The traditional mojito recipe is said to have been created by sailors and African slaves who worked on sugarcane plantations in Cuba. These workers would mix sugarcane juice, lime, and mint together as a way to stay hydrated and combat the heat and humidity of the Caribbean. Over time, the recipe evolved to include rum, widely available on the island, in place of the sugarcane juice.

The mojito gained popularity in Cuba during the early 20th century, and it was a favorite drink of Ernest Hemingway, a frequent visitor to the island. After the Cuban Revolution in 1959, many Cuban exiles brought the mojito to Miami and other parts of the United States, helping to popularize the drink outside Cuba. Today, the mojito is enjoyed worldwide and is considered a classic cocktail.
